East of Fife Province wins 2016

This season’s Province Pairs competition took place on Monday 11 January 2016, with 16 pairs taking part over two sessions.

The qualifiers for the High Road from the group stages were Strathkinness, Markinch, Hercules and the Vice President (Bruce Birrell) & Partner, all of whom came through their 3 matches unbeaten. In the semi-finals, Markinch got the better of Strathkinness while Hercules beat Bruce & partner.

Peter and Anne Malcolm representing Hercules started the final the better, picking up a 2 at the first end, and then looked good for a shot or two at the next. However, Ronnie Wilson ably supported by past winner Morag Erskine played a hit and roll followed by a difficult draw to peel the match going into the final end. They then dominated that final end leaving Peter facing 5 shots with his final stone. His tricky final draw was just a little too light, leaving Markinch as the winners of this year’s competition. Congratulations to Ronnie and Morag.

In the Low Road (for the runners-up in each group), the semi finals were won by Last Year’s Winners (Alan Cairns & Marion Fraser) and Thornton (Jessie Drysdale and Gordon Thomson) who beat Balcaskie and Cambo Ladies respectively. Alan and Marion picked up a 3 in the first end of the final, and although Jessie and Gordon stayed in the match with a 2 at the next, Alan and Marion got some consolation from not retaining the trophy by taking the Low Road prize instead. Well done to them.

Thanks to everyone who took part. 30 matches were played in all, with many good shots and close games.

Points

17 curlers representing most of the clubs in the Province took part in the Points Competition on 15 February 2016. As always, the ice won, with some shots – inwicking and outwicking in particular – proving very tricky. Some fared better than others though and when the scores were totted up the medal winners were:

Carnegie Trophy

1st Alan Cairns – 25 points

2nd George Penrice – 20 points

3rd Ron Kidd – 18 points

Cameron Trophy

1st Morag Erskine (Markinch CC) – 17 points

2nd Olive Weir – 14 points

Province President John Whiteford presented the trophies to Alan and Morag. Well done to them, and thanks to all who took part.
