A Short History
The Province was instituted on 27 September 1887 at a meeting held in St Margaret’s hotel, Dunfermline.
Ten Clubs formed the original Province membership, viz Broomhall, Aberdour, Crossgates, Donibristle, Dunfermline, Lochgelly, Oakley, St Margaret’s (Inverkeithing), Torry, and Saline Ice Club. As time has passed, considerable movement has occurred. Original Member Clubs have become obsolete, new Member Clubs have been established, and some Clubs have left, or left and rejoined the Province.
The founding Officers of the Province included (as President) the Earl of Elgin and (as Secretary and Treasurer) Mr Robert Husband. It is noteworthy that Mr Husband served in that capacity for fifty years until his retirement from the post at the AGM on 19 October 1937, when ex-Provost (of Dunfermline) Husband was voted Province President.
It is further noted that Mr Husband’s son (Mr William Craig Husband) succeeded him as Secretary and Treasurer and held the post for a further twenty-four years, relinquishing it at the AGM held on 13 September 1961.
The current Constitution was presented and approved at the AGM held on 26 April 1989 and amended at the AGM on 29 March 2012 when the election of President was reduced to 1 year. He/she is then expected to spend one year on the Executive Committee in an ex-officio position at the end of that period.
The Ordinary Members of the Executive Committee (Article 8 of the Constitution) while noted as being voted for annually are elected on the basis that they will serve (subject to agreement at the AGM) for three years.
