Saturday 24th October 2015<\/p>\n

Every five years since the year 2000, the RCCC has organised an Indoor Grand Match. Following the format of previous matches, the North versus the South was played over 3 sessions of curling across Scotland’s 17 curling venues. As the programme states: “2,376 curlers, 594 teams, 388 clubs, 17 venues”.<\/p>\n

Lauderdale was drawn to play at Kelso against Fettercairn 2.\u00a0Kenny, Roger, Richard and Irene\u00a0arrived at the club to find them already there; Gavin, Ian, Dougie and Jack were making a weekend of it, with a round of golf lined up at Roxburgh the next morning! The day at Kelso was themed for the opening of the Borders Railway, and plenty of\u00a0imagination had been used up creating some great costumes – there were a few fat controllers, a couple of boiler suits, a ghost train and plenty of other creative touches. The players for each session were ‘piped’ on to the ice, and lined up before the action commenced.<\/p>\n

The curling was then in full swing, until a short interval after 4 ends for some refreshment, which was marked with a ‘broom stack’. This was my first experience of stacking brooms, and I was a little short of artistic inspiration. Other teams added some nice touches like a Thomas the Tank, a flashing ghost, and even a little trainset!<\/p>\n

Eight ends of curling ended in a 12-8 win for Lauderdale against our North opponents. This included a 7 for us in the second end, which was marked with a small prize at the prize-giving at the end of the session. The Indoor Grand Match overall was won by the South by 2154 points to 1928 (The South has won all 4 Grand Matches). The teams retired to the lounge for a few drinks and a fine meal, where stories and laughter were exchanged! The prize-giving included spot prizes for best costumes and best broom stack, both won by the ladies from Raith & Abbotshall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
